Raymond William McGill Jr., age 100, of Decatur passed away February 2, 2017. Raymond was the last surviving firefighter of the Winecoff Hotel Fire in 1946. He wrote a firemen’s training manual that is still used today all over th Read Obituary
Chief R. B. Sprayberry and I send our condolenses to the family of Chief McGill. He and Raymond were good friends and served on the Atlanta Fire Department during some difficult times including the tragic Winecoff fire in 1946 which took so many lives. Chief Sprayberry is now 94 and living in Ball Ground, Ga. His health prohibits him from attending the service but we will be remembering the family in our prayers.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the many close friends of Chief McGill.
My mother, the late Doris J. (Joyner) Jones and our family loved and respected the values held by both brothers, Raymond and Marion. Their many contributions to the Atlanta Fire Department, their fellow Firefighters, the Citizens of Atlanta and our family are well known. Both brothers were truly men of their words and stood honorably and trusted among the men who knew and worked with and beside each of them.
Fate whispers to the warriors, "You cannot withstand the storm" and the warriors whispered back, "We are the storm !"
