Mary Smart was a friend of our family long before my time. She was a childhood and lifelong friend of my Aunt Katherine Stanley Bennett. She was a lifelong friend of my Mom, Jean Stanley Elliott. As a child, I admired Mary Smart, as the most beautiful, saintly lady I knew at Mt. Harmony. In Juniors, she led Sunday assemblies. She sang faithfully in the choir every Sunday. She set a Godly example before all of us Mt. Harmony kids. In my family, if the doctor was unavailable, Mrs. Smart was only a phone call and a short drive away. On one occasion, we went to her house for shots (what kind I do not recall). It was probably the only time in my life I wasn't happy to see Ms. Smart, even though she was gentle, kind and understanding.
Mary and Bill were Godly parents, setting a Godly example before Jeff and Carol, teaching them the precepts of God, and seeking the best opportunities for their growth. We took music lessons at Mt. Harmony, and sometimes had back-to-back lessons. Mary was faithful and dilligent, accompanying her kids to piano lessons, attentive to Dr. Bower's feedback, and assuring that they practiced daily, even when challenged by other demands.
To God be the glory for this saint of God who was influential in my Christian growth. Thanks to the saving grace of Jesus Christ, I look forward to a reunion with Mary and many other saints of the Lord in eternity.
