Kyle Yancey's Obituary
Bennett Kyle Yancey, 82, of Austell, Georgia died February 16, 2008.
Services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, February 20 at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, 561 Veterans Memorial Hwy, Mableton, conducted by Rev. Bob Baxter, Senior Pastor; Rev. Garland Odom, and Rev. Fred Shelnutt.
Born in Tampa, Florida he spent his childhood near Ashburn, Georgia and moved to Austell as an adolescent, graduating from Austell High School in 1944. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served in the Allied Occupation Forces in Japan. When honorably discharged he attended Emory University and graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1951. He was a member of the Cobb County Bar Association, Georgia Bar Association, American Bar Association, and admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. He actively practiced law until his death. Mr. Yancey was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1962 to represent the 33rd district and served two terms. Notable legislation he introduced was that which changed Cobb County’s government from a single commissioner to multiple commissioners and the bill that created the State Court of Cobb County. He also introduced and secured passage of legislation eliminating the “fee” system of setting arbitrary fines. Kyle was a member for over 50 years of both the South Cobb Lions Club and Latham Lodge, Chapter 12, F. and A. M. He supported the American Chestnut Foundation and the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills. He was an avid reader of American and English history and an accomplished and generous gardener. Survivors include wife Janet Yancey; daughter Kathryn Yancey; son Phillip Yancey; son Stephen Yancey and wife Laura; grandchildren James, John and Sarah; and sister Glennie Madge (Mrs. Robert) Martin of North Carolina. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
