William Howard "Bill" Cagle's Obituary
William Howard "Bill" Cagle, 91, died Monday, April 27, 2015. He was born in Knoxville, TN but was raised along with his older brother S.C. Cagle, Jr. in Talking Rock, GA. Bill attended Pickens County High School, Jasper, GA. He worked for Glenn L Martin Aircraft Company, Baltimore, MD until World War II began. He joined the U.S. Navy April 1943. After basic training he was assigned to the U.S.S. Kimberly, Destroyer entering combat in the Pacific November 1943. The Kimberly saw action in Okinawa, Philippines, Leyte, Manila, Aleutian Islands and other areas of the Pacific. The Kimberly escorted the battleship Missouri when she left Japan to return to the United States. While the Japanese surrender terms were being signed on the Missouri, September 2, 1945, Tokyo Bay, the Kimberly stood by and crew members were able to witness the ceremony. After the war, Bill was in the Mechanical Contractor Industry for 40 years. He was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 72 Union for 65 years. He worked for Lorne Company and Sam P. Wallace Company as Superintendent over major mechanical jobs in Atlanta (Peachtree Plaza, Regency Hotel, Atlanta Gas Tower and many others). After retirement he worked as a Consultant Engineer at J.W. Marriott, Atlanta. Bill was a Mason and member of the Austell Methodist Church. As a young boy growing up in Talking Rock, Ga he learned to hunt and fish enjoying this throughout his life. Bill is predeceased by his brother, S.C. Cagle, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Cagle; son, David Cagle(Kelly); daughter, Carole Cagle Bennett (Greg); five grandson, Clinton, Jarrett and Adam Cagle, John and Will Mitchell; sisters, Mary Lou Cagle and Elizabeth Cagle Gentry (Jack); sister-in-law, Hilda Cagle, Jean Cairnes, Winifred Clifton(Leyman); many nephews and nieces.
Graveside Services will be held Wednesday 1:00 PM at The Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. Davis-Struempf Funeral Home & Crematory, Austell.davisstruempf.com
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Piedmont Heart Institute Society Fund in memory of Willliam H. Cagle
