Tommie Jean Bates' Obituary
Tommie Jean Bates, age 82, of Ranburne, AL and formerly of Marietta, passed away surrounded by her family on April 22, 2022.
Tommie was born to Tom and Geneva Quinn in Atlanta. She grew up in Atlanta and graduated from West Fulton High School. Tommie was a wonderful homemaker for many years, and after she had all of her children in school, she began working at J.C. Penney’s. She worked for Penney’s for almost 30 years before her retirement.
Tommie was a long-time resident of the Marietta area and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Smyrna. She was quite crafty and enjoyed creating things with her hands, from creating magnificent wedding cakes to making macrame. She was also an avid outdoorswomen; she loved to fish, be on the beach, and go camping. She loved to go on cruises, and for many years, she traveled with family and friends to multiple locations, and had fun at the occasional casino.
Tommie is preceded in death by her husband, Willard C. Bates, Sr.; and grandson, Nick Moore. She is survived by her children; Willard “J.R.” Bates, Jr. of Ranburne, AL, Brenda Moore (husband, Dion) of Ranburne, AL, and Renee Pollard (husband, Rocky) of Graham, AL; sister, Flora Carr of Ranburne, AL; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many beloved extended family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 27, 11:00 AM at Davis-Struempf Chapel with Rev. James Owen officiating. Interment will follow the service at Bascomb Methodist Church Cemetery, Woodstock, GA, Preacher Doug Huggins officiating.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home.
