Thelma — Such a dear friend for many years. When I retired from Douglas County School System, she recruited Mom and me to work the polls with her and James and started me on a 16 year career working elections, as well as she groomed me for my last 10 years as a poll manager.

I was a friend of Thelma's younger brother, Bob. He and I played together since we were neighbors. My mom and I went to a high school play at DCHS; it was some sort of detective story. Lo and behold, Thelma was the detective with a trench-coat, etc. This was a bit of a shock in that era to have a female as the lead in a detective story!
When I was in MYF at Midway, Thelma and James would drive the group to church events. James had a station wagon and would have his arm around Thelma as he was driving. We would say "Two hands on the wheel". Thelma would reply that she had a hand on the steering wheel so there were two hands on the wheel. RIP, dear Thelma. Jay McLendon
