Shirley Carden Elkins' Obituary
Shirley C. Elkins, age 91 of Austell, GA, passed away on July 14, 2024. She was born in Ohio Co. Kentucky and grew up in Hartford, Kentucky. She was a graduate of Western Kentucky University and spent 25 years teaching home economics at Daviess County Middle School in Owensboro, KY. After retirement, her and her husband moved to Atlanta in 1985.
Shirley was a faithful member of Mount Harmony Baptist Church of Mableton and enjoyed singing in their Celebration Choir for years and traveling to Senior Living homes, spreading God’s word through song. She loved helping others and was a devoted volunteer at Crossroads Community Ministries for over 20 years, helping serve meals to those in need. She also loved traveling, cooking and was an amazing seamstress.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James A. Elkins. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Elkins (spouse, Matthew McLennan) ; step-children, Jim Elkins and Jamie Lemon; grandchildren, Andrew Elkins, Katie Elkins, Sydney McLennan, and Maggie McLennan; and many beloved extended family and friends.
A memorial service honoring Shirley's life will be held Friday, August 9th, 11:30 AM with Rev. Steve Hale officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 11:30 AM before the service.
