Dr. Samuel Kwabena Somuah's Obituary
Dr. Samuel Kwabena Somuah of Accra, Ghana passed away on the 3rd of July 2022. He was married to Dr. Harriet Somuah, and blessed with four children.
Dr. Sam was born on the 13th of November 1951 in Obo Kwahu, in the Eastern region of Ghana. He received his secondary education at West Africa Secondary School and Prempeh College, and then continued to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, where he graduated with a BSc. in Mineral Engineering. Dr. Sam continued his tertiary education at The Ohio State University, where he graduated with an MSc and PhD in Metallurgical Engineering.
After graduating from The Ohio State University, Dr. Sam moved to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia where he worked as a Research Engineer at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, focused primarily on corrosion and its applications in the oil & gas and petrochemical industries.
Dr. Sam was a renowned IT Specialist in his home country of Ghana, where he led one of the country’s leading software development companies for many years. Amongst his many accomplishments were playing a pioneering role in the development of Ghana’s first ICT Policy (ICT4D) and co-creating Ghana’s first Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). He was the first Chief Information Technology Officer (CITO) of Ghana’s premier university - The University of Ghana, Legon, where he transformed the university’s IT system.
Uncle Sam, as he was affectionately called by many, was a born again believer who always sought to live and practice the word of God. He was passionate about helping young believers and young people in general navigate the challenges of life. He was an encourager and a life coach in his own right, compassionate and generous to a fault. Dr. Somuah fellowshipped at Calvary Baptist Church where he served on multiple committees.
He is survived by his mother Obaapanyin Abena Adane, his wife Harriet, his children Shirley, Sharon, Sam Jr., and Stephen, siblings, and numerous other relations and friends.
The funeral will be held on the 23rd of July 2022 the Davis-Struempf Funeral Home, Austell Georgia with a viewing at 9.00am, followed by a funeral service at 11.00am. Interment will be at the Mount Harmony Memorial Gardens, Mableton, Georgia.
