Richard Reider's Obituary
Cmdr. Richard Kenneth Reider, USN (retired), age 88 of Austell, formerly of Elizabethtown, PA, died April 20, 2012. Richard joined the United States Navy in 1941. His plan was to see the world, go home, and get a job. But World War II changed his mind. After two years of working on aircraft and searching for German submarines, he returned to the U.S. and entered flight school. He received his Navy gold wings in 1945. He served twenty-six years in the Navy, retiring in 1966. During his career he logged hundreds of aircraft carrier take off and landings as naval aviator. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at University of Missouri, received a Bachelors of Science from U.S.N. Post Graduate School, and a Master of Arts in Mathematics from Duke University. After retiring from the Navy, he taught advanced math at Westminster School in Atlanta for twenty years and was head of the math department. He and his wife enjoyed traveling the world, seeing seventy-two countries and visiting family and friends. He is survived by the love of his life, Jean Wise Reider; daughter, Carol Paulsen of Virginia; son, Richard E. Reider of Atlanta; sister, Arlene Barnes of Elizabethtown; grandchildren, Kenneth Paulson and Dana Matuszak; and five great-grandchildren. The memorial service honoring his life was held April 24, 2012 at Presbyterian Village with Rev. Debbie Wells officiating. Committal service was held at Georgia National Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements were by Davis-Struempf Funeral Home & Crematory in Austell, Georgia.
