Richard "Dick" Akin's Obituary
Richard Russell Akin, “Dick” to his family and friends, age 92 of Woodstock passed away October 6, 2024.
Dick was born to Frank Akin and Elizabeth Stanfield Akin in Albany, GA. In his childhood, the family moved from Albany to Austell, and Dick gradated from Austell High School. He began his career at Western Electric, where he installed large switch gear. As technology changed and advanced, he was promoted to engineering and was responsible for helping design the new electronic switch gear. From Western Electric, to Southern Bell, Bellsouth, to AT&T, Dick spent his entire career working in telecommunications.
Dick was a man of many interests. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating. Many years, the family feasted on vegetables that Dick tended in his own garden. He was also a gun collector and had extensive knowledge of the guns he owned.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife of 72 years, Peggy Anne Akin; and sister, Betty N. Wallace.
He is survived by his children, Kenneth Akin of Norcross and Rhonda Johnston of Evans; granddaughter, Natalie Cobb (husband, Adam); great-grandchildren, Thomas and Luke; and beloved nieces and nephews.
A funeral service honoring Dick’s life will be held Wednesday, October 9th, 12:00 PM at Davis-Struempf Chapel with Dr. Farren Roper officiating. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Harmony Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends for visitation from 11:00 to 12:00 PM before the service.
