Ray Burke Gary Sr.'s Obituary
Ray Burke Gary, Sr. of Cobb County passed away on December 31,2017 at age 92. Ray was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. His late parents were William Homer Gary and Gussie Seagraves Gary. Ray served in the Navy during World War II. After his service, he attended Atlanta Law School. He practiced Law in the Greater Atlanta area. While attending law school, he married Hazel Combs Gary. They were married for 67 years. While married, Hazel worked in Ray’s law office with him. Hazel passed away in 2014.
Ray is survived by his three children, Ray Burke Gary Jr., Ginger Cheryl Gary Marvin, and Victor Gary. He is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Ray was active in his community over the years, some of the organizations he belonged to were Masons and Shriners. He served as President of three different schools PTA organizations. He served on the Cobb County School Board for seven years. Ray was a life time member of the Cobb Bar association. He was awarded the Bobby Cleveland award in 2006 by the Cobb Bar. He was a member of the Georgia Bar Association, American Judicature Society, Georgia Association Plantiff Trail Attorneys, Sigma Delta Kappa Legal Fraternity. He was associate Lay Leader of Atlanta Marietta District United Methodist Church and a member of Mableton Moose Lodge. Ray was a member of Bethany Methodist Church for his entire life. In lieu of flowers, it is his wish that contributions be made to Bethany United Methodist Church Building Fund.
The family will receive visitors at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home on Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 6:00PM to 8:00 PM. The funeral home is located at 1975 East-West Connector Austell, Georgia. The funeral service will be held at Bethany Methodist Church on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 11:00 AM. The church is located at 736 Hurt Road SW Smyrna, Georgia.
Ray will be buried at Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery next to his wife, Hazel.
We want to thank his nieces, Sheila Combs, Janet Phillips, and a grandniece, Frankii Smith for their love and dedication while Ray lived in assisted living for the last three years. You are special angels!
