Ollie R. Hunter's Obituary
Ollie Ruth Frances Towns Hunter was born on March 31, 1934, in Atlanta, Georgia
at Grady Memorial Hospital to the union of the late Frances Wyatt Towns and
Hubert Towns. She was the second born child of their five children. Three of whom
preceded her in death (Hubert Towns, Jr.; Robert Towns; and
Betty Ruth Towns Fellows).
She accepted Christ at an early age. She grew up serving the Lord at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in her early childhood and adolescent years, as an adult at Cascade United Methodist Church, and in her senior years at Trinity United Methodist Church.
She was a faithful servant as a choir, stewardship, and usher board member.
Ruth often cooked meals for church gatherings, meeting and events;
her pound cakes were enjoyed by so many.
She transitioned from this life on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at the age of 84.
She was married on April 10, 1953, for fifty nine (59) years to Louis Raifus Hunter
(deceased). They had three (3) children, Miriam Elaine, Sandra Elaine and Raifus
Lamar. Her favorite sport was fishing. She liked old church hymns and country music;
pink and green were her colors. Her best times of the year were spring and fall. She also spent her time gardening and manicuring the lawn. She loved to read the Bible. Collecting cook books, cooking, shopping and eating at fine restaurants were a few
of her passions. She enjoyed entertaining her family and friends at her home.
Her education began at Ben Hill Elementary School, then on to Booker T. Washington High School, the Belmont Nursing School and finally, the Grady Nursing School.
Ruth was an active member of a several clubs and lodges. The Three Rose Social Club, Eastern Star, Heron of Jericho and Red Hat Society. She was the founder and Queen of the Red Hot Gems of Atlanta. She loved to travel, especially, Florida. But according to her, the best places to be were church, home, ball games and car races.
Being a christian, mother, home maker and wife were her first priorities. She also worked on many extended nursing cases in Florida and Georgia. She worked as
a nurse for Holy Family Hospital, various nursing homes and individual private duty assignments. She was a cashier at The Bird Cage Lounge, Jean Package Store, and
Big Star and Big Apple grocery stores. As the first black manager of Barricini Candies at Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta, GA, she provided opportunities for young black women
to work; it was their first job for some them. Lastly, she worked for the Sun Trust and
Bank of America (formerly C&S, Citizens & Southern) banks.
Ruth leaves to cherish memories of her: three (3) children: Miriam Elaine Hunter Ross (Percy Willis) of Douglasville, Georgia, Sandra Elaine Stone of Atlanta, Georgia and Raifus Lamar Hunter of Lithia Springs, Georgia; three (3) grand children:
