Nina Mae Brown's Obituary
Mrs. Nina Mae Brown, age 84, transitioned on Saturday, June 6, 2015. She was born May 28, 1931 in Placquemine Parish, Louisiana. She raised her children in Lake Charles, Louisiana and later lived in Houston, Texas before moving to Georgia to be closer to her daughter who was her caregiver. Mrs. Brown earned three degrees in English, Art and Secondary Education from McNeese State University (1961) and Texas Southern University. She taught in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana and Houston Independent School District. She was also an Occupational Therapist for State of Louisiana Mental Health Department and an Executive for the Louisiana Department of Labor. She was a life-long learner, an avid gardener, chef, seamstress, fisherman, activist and justice seeker for all, a sculptor of the human form, and painter of landscapes depicting beautiful floral, an educator, a lover of books and she passed this love of reading onto her grandchildren.
She passed these skills on to the next generations, her lineage is filled with outspoken individuals, artists, painters, a world renowned caterer, a fishing obsessed grandson, and a grandson and granddaughter who graduated law school and earned Juris Doctorates.
Nina brought life to 7 children, (6 boys and one daughter).In her diary she wrote that she wanted most of all to see that her “sons and daughter be beautiful people who love Jehovah God first and who love me and their families.”
Always full of humor, in her later years, she also asked Jehovah God for a good man, having been preceded in death by four husbands. She ended her entry with “Amen, Jehovah through Jesus Christ.” Her family is comforted by her faith that she knew Jehovah God.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents Edward Junice and Mary L “Momma Mae” Woods; her siblings, Martha Llorens, Edward H Woods, Ruth E Woods; her spouses, Boyd Peters, Sr.; Ernest Brown, Jr., and her sons, Ernest Brown III and James Milton Cheeks Brown and her daughter in laws, Delores Lynn Charles Peters, and Polly Mompremier
Her surviving siblings are Eugene R Woods, Mary L Campbell, and Frank Woods.
Her surviving children and their spouses are, Tony Shane Peters (son), Boyd (son) and Stephaine Peters (daughter in-law), Henry Peters (son), Fabian Kennedy Brown (son), Faidra Ellen Ford-Cox (daughter) and Lacy K. Cox (son in-law).
Her surviving grandchildren are, Lavell and Anna (spouse), Tonya Campbell, Terrea, Demarcus, Dedrick, Daszman, Khaliliah, Najarian, Jaclogne, Petrina, Henry Jr., and Antonio “AJ”.
Her great-grandchildren: E.J., Elijah, Lil Pete, Jade, Devin P. Edwards, Devin Peters and Xavier.
The family will have a garden memorial on Saturday, June 27 at 5:00 o’clock p.m. at the home of her daughter Faidra Ford-Cox. Nina Brown left us some great recipes. Dinner will be served following the memorial. Contact 404-483-6325 or [email protected]
