Mike Cook's Obituary
Michael Erwin Cook, DTM, age 73 of Austell, passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013. Mike was a Distinguished Toastmaster., Past President of Rome Toastmasters Club, Past President and founder of Rome Seniors Toastmasters Club, Past Toastmasters area Governor; Recipient of the Toastmasters Phoenix Award, Member of the Georgia Speakers Bureau, and of the Toastmasters Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Georgia Association of Professional Engineers, Winner of Georgia Association of Professional Engineers New Product Design Award, and Past Chairman of AWS, Atlanta Chapter. As a member of Austell United Methodist Church, he was a past Chairman of administrative Board and past Trustee. He was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel in the Georgia Militia by Governor George Busbee and also served in the United States Navy. He was the Founder and Co-Founder of three corporations as well as a member of the Masonic Lodge #51 F & AM, Phillipsburg, NJ. He was trained in under water demolition by the U.S. Navy Seals at the mine warfare school in Charleston, SC and was a member of the American ordinance Association. Mike was a member of the design team for the Bell Huey Helicopter used in Vietnam and a member of the design team for the Reentry Shield for the first manned space flight.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Nance Cook; children, Karen Cook and Darren Cook, both of Austell; sister, Faye Cook Webb of Virginia Beach, VA; brother, Kenneth Cook of VanWyck SC; nephews, Eddie Todd and Doug Todd, both of Stockbridge, Bill Nance, Cecil Nance, Jr, and John Nance, all of McConnells, SC; nieces, Wanda Croy of Carrollton and Evelyn Moser of McConnells, SC.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 until 8 PM. The funeral services to honor Mike will be held at Austell First United Methodist Church on Friday, April 26th at 2:00 PM with Rev. Michael Martin officiating. Interment will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM at Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe, North Carolina.
