Mickey Johnston Bateman's Obituary
Mrs. Meveline (Mickey) Johnston Bateman, beloved wife, devoted sister and loving aunt, passed away on June 30, 2009, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 84. Mickey was born September 14, 1924 in Randolph Co, Alabama to John Orion and Effie Pearl (Chaffin) Johnston and her older brother, John W. Her mother, Effie Pearl died in 1926. Her father then married Pearl Edwards and to this union seven children were born. Mickey graduated from Woodland High Scholl in May 1943 and she completed School of Stenography. Mickey met the love of her life, Royce (Roy) R. Bateman, while working for Olan Mills. Roy was from Texas. They married after a brief courtship on Dec. 8, 1945. They were happily married for 51 years until Roy’s death on March 10, 1997. Mickey was also preceded in death by her infant daughter, Pamela Ann (1952); her parents; her brothers, John (‘81), Bobby (’87) and her sister Jo Ann (’02); and the only mother she had known, Pearl Edwards Johnston (’05). Surviving family include her siblings & their spouses, Jerry & Kathy Johnston of Bowdon, GA, Ray & Joan Johnston of Ft. Worth, TX, Dess & Dub Russell of Lawrenceville, GA, Mary & Bob Terrell of Cartersville, GA, Janice & Tom Kemp of Gretna, LA, and many nieces, nephews and their families. Mickey has resided with her niece Gail (Johnston)& Tom Wells since 2004 in Fayetteville, GA. They made an adorable apartment out of their basement, which enabled Mickey to remain in the comfort of her family and preserving the quality of life in her final years. Mickey and Roy enjoyed fishing, having their travel trailer on Lake Wise or Lake Wedowee, or sharing meals with family and friends. They always had a garden with tomatoes, peppers, beans and other veggies. They got much enjoyement from working the garden and sharing produce with others. Mickey had a pear tree and she made pear preserves. Mickey and Roy loved dancing to the big band sound. Their last dance together was on their 51st anniversary in 1996. They enjoyed many of their anniversaries with nieces Gail (& Tommy) and Paulette (& Ralph.) Roy and Mickey had resided in Anniston, Alabama, East Point, Georgia, but their last home together was in Austell, Georgia. While in East Point, Mickey belonged to the Dogwood Hills Garden Club and won several flower awards. Mickey was an executive secretary at an insurance company in Atlanta for many years. She enjoyed ceramics and gave away many of her pieces. She loved to cook for others. Family favorites are her fresh cranberry salad, homemade pimento cheese and lemon bars!
The family will receive friends Thursday 4 – 8 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 2, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Davis-Struempf Chapel. Mickey will be laid to rest beside her beloved Roy at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park, Marietta, GA following the services.
