Martha Pettis' Obituary
Martha Vickers Pettis was born on May 10, 1933, the seventh child to the Mr. Elder Ree
& Estella Mitchell Vickers in Barbour County, Alabama. Martha received her education
through the Henry County and Dothan City School Systems.
Martha was joined in holy matrimony to the late Calvin Pettis, in 1964, the family then
moved to Queens Village, New York, where she was employed with Creedmoor State
Hospital as a certified nursing assistance and was very proud of the fact that she was the
only CNA who passed the pharmaceutical state exam.
Martha joined the Cunningham Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was baptized
into the faith in 1976, there she established a lifelong friendship with Mickey Gonzales
and Marva Daniels. Martha was witty, feisty, a sharp dresser, who loved high heels despite
her already tall statue. The family historian who kept you captivated with interesting,
funny memories from the past filled with the comment of “My Word.” Martha remained
in New York until her health began to fail and then her son Paul moved her to Mableton,
Georgia, to live with he and his wife Dionne, where she was cared for and loved.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Elder Ree and Estella Vickers, her siblings,
Naomi Morrison, Frances V. Lomack, Annie Phoebe Vickers, Georgia W. Vickers, twins,
James Vickers, and Johnnie V. Tillman, & John Austin Vickers.
Martha was a faithful member of the Cooper Lake Congregation of the Jehovah’s
Witnesses, where she was welcomed and made to feel at home by Elder Leroy Hudson &
Family, and Brother Terald Melton & Family along with entire congregation until her
passing, where she was loved and enjoyed by many.
Martha leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Glenda Gail (Rudolph)Brown; her
son, Paul Augusta (Dionne)Pettis, her grandchildren; Keisha Brown (Ernest); Tracie
(Torrey) Hines; Janice (Phil) Thomas; Jazmine (Michael) Marques; Austin Bennett and
Alexandria Jones. Great-Grand Children; Erica Brown, Jalen Hines, Jordan Hines, Etta
Thomas, William Thomas, Margot Marques, Malcom Marques, Noah Jones, and Blake
Jones. One sister, Dorothy Vickers Fleming and a host of other relatives and friends.
