Martha (Nancy) Bell Vaughn Cate's Obituary
My mother Martha (Nancy) Bell Vaughn Cate passed away peacefully in the gentle hands of her hospice caregivers on Saturday, January 25th 2025 after a long journey through the stages of COPD.
Nancy to most, Martha to the court of record and friends later in life, and a charming and genuine soul to all who had the gift of knowing her she spent her final weeks as she spent her previous 78 years: building relationships, helping others find their path through life and touching those around her deeply regardless of the breadth of their time together.
Born February 4th, 1946 in Atlanta, GA to parents Fletcher David Vaughn and Lillie Bell Vaughn she was the 3rd of 4 children: Doyle Vaughn (b.1929); Louise Vaughn (b.1932); Loyd Vaughn (b.1947). Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, her nephew Bubba Rollins, and her lifelong friend from age 4 Elaine Cupp. She is survived by her son Kenneth Wayne Cate Jr, daughter in-law Shannon Lea Cate, granddaughter Lillian Belle Cate; Sister of the Heart Mary Morgan, lifelong friend from age 4 Janie Hunt; Sisters in Law Nell Vaughn and Pat Vaughn; Nephews Robin Vaughn, Ronnie Henderson, Bradford (wife Tina) Vaughn; Nieces Sherri (husband Kenny) Watson, Terri (husband Dana) Duncan, Lindsey “April” (husband Eric) Smith; Great-Nephews William (wife Erin) Vaughn , Kody (wife McKenna) Watson, Isaac Vaughn, Brenton Smith, Andrew Smith; Great Nieces Ashley (husband Matt) Montes, Shauna (husband Brian) Vaughan, Sarah (fiancé Drew) Duncan, Kristi (husband Chris) Culpepper, Breley Smith; Great-great nieces and nephews Penelope and Graham Montes, Landon and Ellie Vaughan, Kaelie and Mia Culpepper; numerous cousins including Susan Samples, Mildred Samples, Vic Barrett, Juanita Monroe, Harold Ellis, Sandra Bartlett, Jerry Burns and so many more I’m probably forgetting; her golden girls who helped so much in the last years of her life Caroline Cribb, Carolyn Winfield, Regina Boykin; and an infinite number of other family and family of the heart.
Please join her family in celebrating within your heart the life and legacy of a truly beautiful soul. She passed from this earth comforted by her faith and watched over by her family. Her children welcome your prayers, thoughts and comforting wishes at this time of loss.
Graveside Services will be held Thursday 1:00 PM at Riverview Cemetery with Chaplain Steve Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday from 10-12 PM at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home.
