Luther Eugene Tumey's Obituary
Luther Eugene Tumey, age 86, of Austell passed on to his Heavenly home March 15, 2024.
Luther was born to Thomas Lawson Tumey and Empress Clio Tumey (née Swofford) in Austin, Texas. When Luther was around 5 years old, the family moved to Georgia, where he spent his formative years in the Austell area. Luther graduated from South Cobb High School in 1956, and after graduation, married his high school sweetheart, Janice. Luther went on to pursue higher education, and received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1963. Luther also proudly served in the Army Reserves.
Luther was a proud Officer with the City of Atlanta Police Department, served over 20 years, and retired in 1992. In his retirement, Luther enjoyed spending time camping in the North Georgia mountains. He was devout in his faith and dedicated to the churches he attended. He also loved being “grill master” and cooking for family and friends. Luther was a beloved grandfather and took the greatest pride in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a treasured husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will be deeply missed.
Luther is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Irene Tumey Phillips, Bob Tumey, Della Tumey Conner, John Tumey; and his son, Randy Tumey.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Janice Tumey; children, Rickey (Alma) Tumey of Snellville, Rhonda (Jim) Higginbotham of Powder Springs, and Rodney (Wendy Worthan) Tumey of Austell; grandchildren, Alyssa (Chantrey), Abby, Ryan, Caleb (Diana), Quinn, Brielle, and Matthew; five great-grandchildren; and many beloved extended family and friends.
A funeral service honoring Luther’s life will be held Monday, March 18th, 2:00 PM at Midway Christian Church in Austell with his grandson, Pastor Caleb Higginbotham officiating. His body will lie in state at the church from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. Interment will follow the service at Powder Springs City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home.
