Lawrence "Larry" Monteith's Obituary
With great sadness we announce the passing of Lawrence “Larry” Monteith at the age of 88 on June 18, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born on July 30, 1934, in Belfast Northern Ireland. He married Philomena McKenna on Sept of 1966 moving to the US in November 1967 settling in Cobb County. He worked for Lockheed, GE and later Ebasco / Raytheon where he retired from.
He was a selfless person and always volunteered to help where needed. He was a founding member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church where he was involved in the Men Club, Saturday Work Project, Cursillo, Men’s Prayer Group, Night Shelter, Habitat and Jamaica projects just to name a few. Over the years he helped several members of the church with transportation to and from church and appointments. In the early 1970’s he along with a couple of other British men started a youth soccer league in Cobb County which later became the YMCA Boys Soccer League. He coached several winning teams over the years until he retired from coaching mid to late 1980s.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years Philomena, his daughter Paula and her husband Scott and his son David and his wife Leigh as well as his grandchildren Claire and Hannah Todd and Colin Monteith. He is preceded in death by his brother Billy and sister Iris and survived by his brother Herby and his sister Dora.
The family of Larry Monteith express their appreciation to family and friends who celebrate his life. Visitation and prayer service will be held on Friday August 11th from 4-8:00pm at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home in Austell. The Celebration of Life Mass will be Saturday August 12th at 2pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Smyrna. In Lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be sent to one of these two organizations.
