John "Jack" Nystrom's Obituary
John (Jack) Nystrom, age 90 of Smyrna, passed away January 6, 2019. He was born July 15, 1928 to John A. Nystrom and Maude (Friedel) Nystrom in Brooklyn, NY. He married the love of his life who preceded him in death, Helen Moore on August 18, 1951 and had four children Jack (Laura), Jim (Sue), Jeff (Christine) and Sue (Paul). He had seven grandchildren, Hayley (Sean) Nystrom, Ben Nystrom, Kristie Nystrom, Vickie Nystrom, Nicholas Rodman, Sam Rodman and Jake Rodman.
Jack served 2 years in the Navy and attended college at Rutgers. He returned to New York City before marrying in 1951 and moving to upstate NY to become a dairy farmer. In 1960 they moved to New Jersey and he began his career as a welder and went on to become a welding engineer. In 1993 he and Helen retired to Floyd County, VA living in the country and restoring an old country home. In 1998 they moved to the Atlanta area to help raise their grandchildren.
Jack was a devout Catholic and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Most recently he was a member of the St. Thomas the Apostle congregation for 20 years. At St. Thomas, he sponsored several people in their journey to Catholicism and led a bereavement group. He was also an avid volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, January 10, 1:00 PM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Habitat for Humanity (https://www.habitat.org/donate) or the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/involved/donate/memorial-giving.html)
