John "Jack" Green Mitchell's Obituary
John (Jack) Green Mitchell passed away on September 6, 2022.
He was born on May 15, 1931 in Atlanta (Sylvan Hills), Georgia, the son of Bernice and John Mitchell. Jack graduated from Boys High School in Atlanta, and then went on to serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following military service, he returned home and began his university education at The Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia (now Georgia State) to become a CPA. He initially worked for the IRS and public accounting firms in Albany and Cordele Georgia, before opening his own firm in downtown Atlanta. He loved playing golf and reading, but his favorite pastime was caring for his 23-acre farm.
Surviving him are his devoted wife of 45 years, Ruth Rivers Mitchell, five children, Lynn Wigley, Ann Woodward (Ben), John G. Mitchell, Jr. (Robin), Mark D. Mitchell (Karen), and Mary Taylor (Rick); ten grandchildren, Christina Bennett, David Woodward, Kevin Wigley, William Mitchell, Andrew Taylor, Kenneth Wigley, Morgan Mitchell Fisk, Seth Taylor, John “Trey” G. Mitchell III, and Jordan Taylor and six great grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy.
A service will be held on Monday, September 12th, 11:00 AM at Arlington Memorial Park. A reception will follow at the Mitchell home beginning at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Atlanta Mission, P.O. Box 20017 Atlanta, GA 30325.
