Jean Nutt Ritchie's Obituary
Jean Nutt Ritchie, born on June 27, 1930, in Atlanta, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly on January 1, 2025, in Austell, Georgia, at the age of 94. She was the beloved daughter of the late Robert Fears Nutt, Jr., and Annie Ruth (Moore) Nutt.
Jean graduated in 1950 from Georgia State College for Women (now Georgia College) with a degree in Spanish. During her college years, she excelled academically and was honored as a member of the Phi Sigma sophomore honor society, the International Relations Club, Alpha Psi Omega dramatic fraternity, and Phoenix, the highest scholastic distinction on campus.
Her passion for education continued throughout her life. In 1988, Jean earned a Master of Science degree in the Teaching of Reading from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. She dedicated herself to teaching, beginning her career with the Mobile County Public School System from 1969 to 1972. She later inspired students as a Spanish and Social Studies teacher at St. Luke's Episcopal School in Mobile.
Jean is survived by her three children: Roxanne Van Bokkelen of Sanibel, FL; James Pulaski Ritchie III (Julie Pietryla) of Indian Head Park, IL; and Angela Ritchie Raymond (Randall D. Raymond) of Mableton, GA. She also leaves behind five cherished grandchildren: James Ian Ritchie and Graham Rhys Ritchie of Mobile, AL; William Van Bokkelen and Frank Van Bokkelen of Newburyport, MA; and Chloe Elaine Raymond of Mableton, GA.
Jean will be fondly remembered for her unwavering kindness, devotion to her family, and sharp wit that brought laughter to all who knew her. Her life was a testament to the power of love, humor, and intellect.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
