James "Jim" Hubbard Martin's Obituary
James "Jim" Martin, 79, a long time resident of Marietta, GA, passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 8.
Jim was born on December 12, 1936, in Uniontown, PA to George Washington Martin and Helen Gertrude Martin (Davis), being the youngest of nine siblings. He grew up in the Martin family home that dates back to the Revolutionary War, the “old stone house” near the base of the mountain on Route 40 in Hopwood, PA.
Jim was a good student and was well liked by his classmates at North Union High School in Uniontown, PA. He played the trumpet in the school band and productions, participated in other school clubs, and served as president of his senior class of 1954.
While still in high school, Jim enlisted in the Air Force and served for 4 years during the Korean War. Following the war, Jim enrolled at Valparaiso Technical Institute where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Electronics, graduating in 1960.
Jim then embarked on his career as an industrial equipment technician and manager, specializing in the setup, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial manufacturing equipment. Jim’s work spanned more than four decades and took him to multiple continents and across the US. He worked for General Electric, National Forge, Coe Mfg, Electro-Flyte, Black Clawson, Harland Simon, and Lockheed Martin.
In retirement he continued to use his analytical and research skills as a volunteer researcher at the Family History Center.
Jim enjoyed traveling, whether for work or to visit family. He was a lifelong learner always looking for the best way to do or improve something. He enjoying reading novels, how to texts, and books, magazines & journals related to health, personal finances, wildlife, history, biblical archaeology, and anything related to America and veterans. While still able he regularly supported these interests and his local LDS church.
Jim remained physically active throughout his life, even playing basketball, wiffle ball, and tennis with his grandchildren past the age of 70. He could regularly be found walking in the local parks.
Jim had a good sense of humor and loved to laugh.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his eight siblings, William, Robert Roy, John "Jack", Bud, Linda Martin, Mary Holchin, Frances Moore, Julie "Judy" Vance.
Survivors include his wife, Nicia P. Martin; sons, Scott Martin, Eric Martin, and Brett Martin; grandchildren, Zach Martin, Rebekah Martin, Caleb Martin, Joshua Martin, Elijah Martin, and Isaac Martin, who affectionately referred to him as 'Papa Coffee'; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Jim’s LDS friends for their care and the positive influence they had on him over the past 15-20 years. The family would also like to thank the staff of Homestead Hospice, and Dr Hariharan & staff of NW Georgia Oncology Centers, Austell, for the care given to Jim.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM, Friday, November 18, 2016, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2595 New Macland Rd, Powder Springs, GA 30127.
