James A. Elkins' Obituary
James A. Elkins, age 90 of Austell, GA, passed away on June 4, 2023. He was born in McCracken County, KY in 1932 and grew up in Reidland, KY. He was a graduate of Murray State University with a Masters in education from Western KY University.
His career began as sports editor for a local newspaper, but he spent most of his career as a public relations director for Kentucky Wesleyan College and Owensboro High School. He also taught journalism at OHS and published the school newspaper and yearbooks. He won numerous state and national awards for his journalism skills and publications during those years.
James was a faithful member of Mount Harmony Baptist Church of Mableton and also loved gardening and watching sports, especially the Atlanta Braves.
He is preceded in death by his two sisters Virginia Bannister and Mary Fields. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Elkins, and children: Jim Elkins, Lisa Elkins and Jamie Lemon.
Grandchildren: Andrew Elkins, Katie Elkins, Sydney McLennan and Maggie McLennan.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 29, 11:00 AM at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home with Pastor Brett Ellington officiating. The family will receive friends at 10:30 AM, before the service.
