Jack Fred Griggs' Obituary
Jack Fred Griggs, age 80 of Powder Springs passed away September 6, 2024, surrounded by family.
He was born to Buddy and Sara Griggs in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jack was a United States Navy Veteran who served on the USS Guadalupe as a Boatswain Mate. He traveled on tours in Singapore and Hong Kong in the mid 1960’s. After his service, he went back to work for Southern Bell (AT&T) where he retired after 45+ years as a lineman.
He was a member of American Legion Post 264 and Post 216.
In his early years, Jack was a country western dancer and was known for his line dancing and two stepping.
He was an avid reader and especially enjoyed western novels by author, Louis L’Amour.
Jack also loved riding Harleys and playing Keno at the American Legion Lodges. He was a frequent winner and was known to win so often that he would leave with notes to be paid to him on his next visit.
Most of all, Jack enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He always had a smile on his face.
Jack loved being around people and never met a stranger.
Together with his family, Jack participated in the Stone Mountain Chili Cookoff. He was very proud they won the people’s choice award for 7 out of 10 years.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Dorothy “Dot” Ann Griggs; son, Joshua Griggs; brother, William Mark Griggs.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Kelley Wright of Douglasville; sisters, Marlene Barrow of Mableton, Suzanne Kiess of Austell, Tina Scott of Austell, Fran Griggs-Nellis of Austell; brother, Bobby Griggs of Douglasville.
He is also survived by a host of extended family members.
A Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00-8:00 PM at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home, Austell.
