Homer Lionel Black's Obituary
Homer Lionel Black, 82, of Mableton, GA, passed away peacefully at home on February 10th, 2025. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he lived a life of service, loyalty, and unwavering faith.
He was born in Cleveland, GA in 1942, and later moved to Hapeville, GA with his parents and siblings.
After graduating from Hapeville High School, he attended Georgia Tech where he earned his undergraduate degree. This opened the door for him to begin his career at Lockheed Martin until he was drafted to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. A proud veteran, Homer was stationed at Fort Dix and served his country honorably.
When his service in the Army was complete he went back to Lockheed where he would work his entire career and also returned to Georgia Tech to earn a master’s degree.
Married in 1966, for 58 years he was the devoted husband of Cheryl Taylor Black, with whom he built a home filled with care and faith. Together, they raised four sons: Chris, Tim, Stephen, and Jon.
His family was his greatest joy. He adored his sons, four daughter-in-laws, and ten grandchildren who endearingly called him “Poppy”.
Faith was at the center of Homer’s life. As a gifted musician, he loved playing the guitar and used his talents to help with worship at Westside Baptist Church. His dependability, leadership, and easy-going temperament blessed many.
Homer saw the beautiful work of his loving Creator outdoors. He instilled that same joy in countless young men through his years as a Scoutmaster for Troop 61 in Smyrna, GA. Later in life he and his wife would spend summers in Livingston, Montana, escaping the metro Atlanta busyness for the quiet serenity of Big Sky Country.
While his legacy lives on through his family and the lives he impacted, he will be dearly missed.
A funeral service honoring Homer's life will be held Sunday, February 23, 2:00 PM at Davis-Struempf Chapel with Pastor A.T. Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM before the service.
An interment service will be held on Monday, February 24, 10:30 AM at Georgia National Cemetery. For anyone wishing to attend the interment service, please plan to be at the cemetery by 10:15 AM.
