Hillard Warren Pouncy Jr.'s Obituary
Hillard Warren Pouncy Jr., a research scientist and one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, passed away on December 16, 2025, at the age of 103.
Born in Prichard, Alabama, and raised in Eufaula, Mr. Pouncy was an outstanding student, graduating as valedictorian of his high school class in 1940. He attended Tuskegee Institute, where he later became a member of the historic Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, training as a bombardier with the 477th Bombardment Group.
After his military service, Dr. Pouncy earned advanced degrees in chemistry, including a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Syracuse University. He enjoyed a distinguished career as a research scientist with Union Carbide, including extended work assignments overseas. He lived and worked for a period in Saudi Arabia as a technical advisor in the oil industry.
A longtime resident of Austell, Georgia, Dr. Pouncy retired in 2005. His life and
accomplishments are preserved in the Georgia Journeys collection at Kennesaw State University. He was also a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal honoring the Tuskegee Airmen.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mattie Mae Hunter Pouncy. He is survived by his sister, Laura (Anne) Jardin; his son, Hillard Warren Pouncy III; his daughter-in-law, Carolyn Johnston Pouncy; his grandson, Hillard Thomas Pouncy; and his wife, Francesca McNeeley; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, January 18th, 2:00 PM at Presbyterian Village, located at 2000 East-West Connector, Austell, GA 30106.
A Graveside Service will be held Monday, January 19th, 10:00 AM at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA.
