Herschel Pritchett, Sr.'s Obituary
Herschel Franklin Pritchett, Sr. of Winston passed away January 28, 2010 at WellStar Community Hospice in Austell. He was 74. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Edna Earl Hunter Pritchett, who he referred to as the best thing to ever happen to him. Born in Atlanta, he was raised and lived in the west metro counties. He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1954-1960, primarily stationed in locations throughout Europe. After military service, his first job was at Roy Davis Funeral Home in Austell.
He later became a long-distance truck driver for Frito Lay, Owens-Illinois, and Printpack. During his career he garnered numerous safe driving awards and logged more than one million miles with no accidents. As a hobby in the 1970s and 1980s he drove a stock car at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, where he later worked on weekends. He was a sports enthusiast and coached his oldest son’s youth baseball teams. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He was a member of Welcome Hill Baptist Church in Douglasville, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent in 70s and 80s. In his younger days he sang bass in the Georgian Quartet, a Southern Gospel/Bluegrass band. He is survived by four children: son and daughter-in-law Michael and Kathy Pritchett of Temple, daughter, Judy Smith of Douglasville, son, Franklin Pritchett of Villa Rica, and daughter Pam Thompson of Dallas. He is also survived by a brother, Charles Pritchett of Hiram, and sisters, Aline Wellham of Douglasville, and Lillian Jones of Powder Springs, and several nieces and nephews. Grandchildren: Marc Pritchett, Brad and Mary Pritchett, Ashley and Keith Hembree, Bo and Melissa Smith, Trevor Thompson, Chelsea Thompson and Halee Thompson, and seven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Davis-Struempf Chapel with Rev. Bill Neese and Rev. Moses Florence officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Baptist Cemetery in Powder Springs. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to support WellStar Community Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association. The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
