Harriet Nottingham Stimson Davis' Obituary
Harriet Nottingham Stimson Davis, age 98, peacefully passed away February 7, 2017 at Presbyterian Village where she had lived since 1994. Born in Virginia and raised in Chattanooga, TN, Mrs. Davis lived and worked in Mississippi, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
Mrs. Davis graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1940 and Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Richmond, VA in 1942. She served as Professional Director of Religious Education in Jackson, MS. She also taught Math at Griffin High School and Lawrenceville High School. She was an active volunteer leader in community Mental Health, initiating and leading a Bosom Buddies support group in her home for many years.
Her passion was for serving God in the church and making a Christian home for her family. After marrying Rev. C. Edward Davis in 1944 she and Rev. Davis served the following churches: Park Circle Presbyterian Church in North Charleston, SC; Third Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC; First Presbyterian Church in Griffin, GA, and Lawrenceville Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceville, GA. After her husband’s retirement, she worked jointly with him in new church development in Florida and several interim pastorates in Georgia. At the time of her death, she was a member of Macland Presbyterian Church in Powder Springs, GA. She was a Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church as well as teacher and encourager to many.
Mrs. Davis is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. C. Edward Davis and two brothers: Thomas Frederick Stimson of Chattanooga, and Jamie Douglas Stimson of Statesville, NC. She is survived by one brother, Bailey Easley Stimson of Rockledge, FL., her daughter, Helen Davis Leach of Roswell, GA; and three sons: Gordon Taylor Davis Sr. of North Venice, FL; Slater Varnell Davis of Ellijay, GA; and John Bailey Davis of Prattville, AL; five grandchildren: Charles Edward Davis, Christopher Michael Davis, Carolyn Wendy Davis-Jenkins, Gordon Taylor Davis, Jr., and Anna Bailey Davis; and eight great grandchildren;
Her Memorial service will be held Saturday February 25, 2017at 2:00 in the Lakeside Room at Presbyterian Village, Austell, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Caring Hands Fund, Presbyterian Village at 2000 East-West Connector, Austell, GA, or Macland Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are with Davis-Struempf Funeral Home, Austell.
