Frank Milton LeGate, III's Obituary
Frank Milton LeGate III, 73, architect, artist, musician. He grew up in Jacksonville, FL and graduated from Robert E. Lee in 1954. He received his architectural degree from the University of Florida and remained a huge Gator fan. He moved to Columbus, Georgia in 1965 then settled in Mableton, GA. His interest in architecture came first from his father, who was a construction engineer. In 1968, he founded Frank LeGate and Associates, an Architectural, Planning and Landscape Design Firm. He designed hundreds of homes and buildings for people all over the country. He was also a self-taught artist and musician. He felt, “art should challenge one to understand from within.” He created numerous paintings, sculptures, carvings, and musical scores. As a sculptor, he used mostly bronzes. His early influencers were Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso. In one of several news articles covering his art, he said, “I don’t follow the trends in sculpture. I want my work to be communicative to all people. I work with sculpture that is specific or that which lends itself to a particular location when shown.” He is survived by wife Ann, daughter Loreal LeGate, son Chris LeGate, granddaughter Lauren Barresi and sister Beth LeGate Pickels (Mike), several nieces and a cousin. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 3:00 PM at the Family Residence.
