Eugene "Gene" Whitlow's Obituary
Carey “Gene” Whitlow passed away on March 10, 2015 in Marietta, Georgia after a heroic battle with liver cancer. He was 80 years old.
A loving husband of 58 years and a remarkable father, granddaddy and great-granddaddy, Gene Whitlow was born in Trion, Georgia on April 13, 1934. Gene spent his entire life serving others; first, as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War, then as a police officer, where he retired as Police Captain of the Marietta City Police in 1986 after 30 years of service. He was also a Freemason for over 30 years. After retiring, Gene became a very active member of Concord Baptist Church, where he was elected as a Deacon in October, 2013. He proudly served in this capacity for the remainder of his life. His hobbies included gardening, Bible-study, gun-collecting and rooting for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Beatrice Whitlow. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Whitlow; brother Jerry (Kathy) Whitlow; daughters Karen (Richard) Vines and Cheryl Whitlow; grandchildren Amanda (Jason) Williams, Zack Vines, Dwayne (Marlana) Crawford, Niki Whitlow; great-grandchildren Ayden Crawford, Gavin Williams, Corban Redd, Jacob Soss, Abigail Crawford and Grayson Crawford, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Donations in honor of Gene Whitlow may be made to the Concord Baptist Church Benevolence fund.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home in Austell, Georgia. The funeral service will be held at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home in Austell, Georgia on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at 2:00pm, and a grave-side service will follow at Davis Chapel Cemetery in Austell, Georgia.
