Emily Castleberry Woody's Obituary
Emily Elizabeth Castleberry Woody, 98 years (and almost 8 months), of Mableton, Georgia, entered her heavenly home on Monday, August 20, 2018 after a brief illness. Emily was born on December 30, 1919 in Gainesville, Georgia to the late Claude and Evie Castleberry. She was the last remaining family member out of ten siblings – Lee Castleberry, Mark Castleberry, Paul Castleberry, Irene Hughes, Grace Martin, Norman Castleberry, Henry Castleberry, Louise Pittman, and Christine Whitney.
Known for her great faith and belief in prayer, she also possessed a contagious smile and a very wonderful sense of humor. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many, who even now are being changed by her witness of constant nurturing love and faith. Her joy for gardening, doing jigsaw puzzles, loving her family, making quilts, and her ministry of making cross bookmarks will never be forgotten.
After graduating from high school, she met her Sweetheart, Walter Stanley Woody and they were married on December 24, 1938. They were married for 39 years until Walter’s death in October 28, 1978. Walter and Emily raised six children, Martha Ann Elliott, Anniston, AL, Faye (and George) Duke, Anniston, AL, Stanley (and Kay) Woody, Douglasville, GA, Shirley Reeves, Mableton, GA, Larry (and Linda) Woody, Mableton, GA and Linda (and Dennis) Stephens, Acworth, GA. Emily is survived by 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides being a loving homemaker and mother, Emily worked for many years and started her career working for Bell Aircraft Company riveting gas bags on Boeing B-29 Aircraft and retired from Cluett-Peabody & Company (Arrow Shirts).
She possessed a true servant’s heart and was a woman of faith and the heart of the Woody family. Emily was a charter member of Ewing Road Baptist Church and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Emily shaped her family’s spirituality by her tireless Christian example. With a real zest for life, Emily loved to read, pray, and play especially with her Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren. She will certainly be missed.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 24, 2018, 1:00PM at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home Chapel. The service will be performed by Pastor Chris Humphries of Calvary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends Thursday from 4:00-7:00 PM. Interment will follow the service at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Douglasville, GA.
