Edna Hatch Hitchins' Obituary
Edna Henrietta Hatch Hitchins was born in Chattanooga, TN on Match 2, 1922 to Montague and Lucy Henry Hatch. In December of 1938, she married John Hammond Hitchins, a GA Tech graduate, and they made their home in Atlanta. During WWII, John served at Fort McPherson while Edna served as a volunteer with the Red Cross. When her children left for school in the 1960’s, Edna returned to college, getting her English degree from GA State and then taught English in the Atlanta School System for several years. She later worked at Georgia Tech as assistant to Dean Vernon Crawford.
Edna and John travelled extensively throughout the world during their 51 years of marriage, prior to John’s Death in 1990. In 1998, Edna married George McDonald, who preceded her in death in 2017.
Edna was a 60-year member of the PEO Sisterhood, a member of the DAR, a founding member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, a passionate environmental preservation advocate, and an avid gardener, and loved books. She passed on those passions to her grateful children: Daughter Linda Hitchins Hodges and Son-in-law Dr. Dan Hodges of Marietta and Son John H. Hitchins, Jr. and daughter-in-law Margaret Driskell Hitchins of Vinings. She was a wonderful grandmother to 6 grandchildren: Susan Hodges Paget, Julie Hodges Thorp, Dan Michael Hodges, Kathryn Hitchins Puritz, Alison Hitchins Knox, John H Hitchins III, 19 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be designated for Trinity Presbyterian Church or the PEO Sisterhood.
Memorial Services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, December 14 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Atlanta.
