Douglas Merriman's Obituary
Mr. Douglas Lloyd Merriman of Lithia Springs, Georgia, passed away on July 22nd, 2010, at the age of 65. If you like canoeing, white water rafting or hiking a mountain trail, than you would have liked and had a lot in common with Doug Merriman. Doug enjoyed camping and the outdoors. His love of the woods and water began in Duluth, Minnesota, where he was born, and his Dad took him fishing. Doug was the oldest son of Dr. Lloyd and Helen Merriman of Marietta. He attended Marietta High, where he enjoyed playing n the band. After finishing high school, he attended Georgia Tech, but preferred adventure over the classroom. He joined the US Air Force and was stationed in Alaska. He fell in love with Alaska and liked to tell of all he learned from the Eskimos. He said, "The Eskimos are happy with a simple life by living in harmony with nature. We could all be happy living like that." After his military discharge, Doug worked for IBM but still enjoyed the simple life. He painted and took many award winning photographs, appearing in many magazines. He was a volunteer at Sweetwater State Park. He enjoyed seeing animals and people live free. Now, after a long illness, his spirit is free to soar with the eagles over the mountains and rivers that he loved. He is survived by his wife Virginia, who loved him dearly. Their hearts are joined even in death. He is also survived by his son, Thomas Merriman; step daughters, Marla Jones, Debbie Mercier, and Lori Hurst; brothers, Thomas Merriman of Acworth, Dan Merriman of Duluth, and Dr. Jim Merriman of Marietta; and best friends, Chuck & Ruth Mandt of Lithia Springs. He will also be deeply missed by his faithful companions, Tiny & Lobo. The family will receive
friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 PM. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 PM on Monday, July 26, 2010, at the Davis-Struempf Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens.
