Dorothy S. Donaldson's Obituary
Dorothy Donaldson (Mrs. Alan W.) of Austell, GA, passed away on March 11, 2012, one week shy of her 96th birthday.
She was born Dorothy Rose Streit in Alliance, OH, on March 18, 1916. Dorothy was the eldest daughter of John W. and Edna (Biery) Streit, and grew up on her father’s farm with her only sibling, younger sister Ethel (Harrison). Dorothy met her husband-to-be, Alan Weston Donaldson, in eleventh grade English class at Alliance High School; both graduated from Mount Union College (also in Alliance) and were married in June 1941. Dorothy and Alan subsequently lived in Baltimore, MD then raised their children in Decatur, GA, later moving to Bethesda, MD and La Grange, IL. Following Alan’s death in 1978, Dorothy continued to live in La Grange until her 2004 move to Presbyterian Village in Austell, GA.
A noted green thumb, Dorothy maintained beautiful landscapes, floral blooms, and vegetable gardens in and around her homes throughout her life. After moving to Presbyterian Village in 2004, she quickly became known as a faithful dead-header and weed-puller, beautifying the surroundings of the entire community. She was an equally avid seamstress who was still crafting quilt-tops during early 2012 in support of a favorite charity that provided social services to the needy.
Surviving Dorothy Donaldson are her three children and their spouses/partners: Jan Donaldson and Mary Anne Guggenheim of Helena, MT; Wes & Lorraine Donaldson of Bush, LA; Becky (Donaldson) & John Holt of Ball Ground, GA. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Jeff Donaldson-Forbes of New York, NY and Kim Forbes of Mount Vernon, IA, and two nephews and their families: DeWitt Harrison of Boulder, CO, and Doug Harrison of Bozeman, MT. Memorial Services will be held Saturday 11:00 AM at Prebysterian Village.
Memorial contributions can be made to:
Caring Hands Fund of Presbyterian Village, 2000 East-West Connector, Austell, GA 30106
