Doris Vivian Cushing's Obituary
Doris Vivian Cushing, age 92, of Delmar Gardens in Smyrna GA, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, March 2, 2018. She arrived in the arms of our Heavenly Father, after 72 years of of marriage and 11 years since her diagnosis of Alzheimer's, we are so happy she has made it home. At her passing she was surrounded by family, including her adoring husband, loving children and grandchildren.
Doris was the second child and only daughter to Vivian and Dorsey Simms of New Orleans Louisiana. She and her older brother Buddy grew up on Willow Street near South Carrollton Ave and the ‘river bend’. As a child she watched the second line parades marching somberly to and joyfully from Carrollton Cemetery only blocks away. At age 16, Doris had her first date with Robert A Cushing, of Aloysius High School. They rode together on a “Ships and Sailors” themed Mardi Gras float honoring the war effort of that February 1941. After graduating from Turchin high school Doris attended Nurses training at Tulane Nursing School. Doris and Bob were married in November of 1945 at Mater Dolorosa Catholic church on S. Carrollton Ave. She had seven children and ten grandchildren and dedicated her life to loving her family and to her Catholic faith. During their 72 year marriage Doris moved her family and children, as the wife of an Air Force Officer, twice to Europe, once to Central America and back home again for tours that included six different states. After her children were grown she turned her desire to serve and help others by feeding the homeless at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in downtown Atlanta where she was ‘line captain’ for ten years.
She is survived by her adoring husband, Robert Cushing Jr. her seven children; Linda Cushing, Father Bob Cushing, Mike (Norma) Cushing, Steve (Laura) Cushing, Paul (Mary) Cushing, Mary (Dudley) Owens, and Carole (Jim) Baeske; grandchildren, Brian (Sara) Cushing, Rob Cushing, Elizabeth Cushing, Rachel Cushing, Zoie Cushing, Corinne Cushing, Madelyn Owens, Audrey Owens, Ian Baeske, Paul Baeske; great grandchildren, Holden Cushing, Macy Cushing, Lee Michael Cushing and family friend Marion Parker.
