Donald Howard Freeman's Obituary
Donald Howard Freeman age 92 of Mableton passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2014. He was born June 29, 1921 in Floyd County and was raised in Cedartown. Preceeding him in death was his wife of 56 years, Betty Jo Freeman, his father, Howard Ballus Freeman and his mother, Rosalee White Freeman. Don was a World War II Veteran, entered active duty on December 7, 1939. Served in the U.S. Army as a Mess Sargeant for the 96th Chemical Warfare Company. He was responsible for the preparation of food for approximately 200 men. He was also responsible for ensuring his staff had the mess hall prepared for inspection. He was Honorably Discharged from the Army in 1945 and re-enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps active reserves for 3 years, discharged in 1949. He earned the following medals during his service to our country: World War II Victory Medal, American Service Medal, American Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. After leaving the service he worked in Rome as a pilot for the U.S. Post Office, he flew mail from Rome to Atlanta. He also worked as a Pharmacist in Rome where he met his wife, Betty Jo Womack. They moved together to Cobb County where he was a volunteer fireman for the South Cobb Fire Department before it became the Cobb County Fire Department. He retired from the Cobb County Fire Department in the early 80's as a Battalion Chief. Don loved camping, fishing and his CB radio- his handle was SkipJack. He spent many years at Lake Weiss with his family and friends and when Mike was younger they would go spend time at "The Fish Camp" in Steenahatchee, FL. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mike & Darlene Freeman; granddaughter, Nicole and her husband Justin; grandson, Michael-Shane and his wife Kristen; 3 great grandchildren, Kambryn, Kynlee and Easton with 2 more on the way! Graveside services will be held Friday 2:00 PM at Mt. Harmony Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-8 PM at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home.
