Consolacion Galam's Obituary
Consolacion Galam (also known as Mommy, Grandma, Shoney, and Cion) was born in Linglingay, Munoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. She met her husband, Ignacio Galam, while in college. After marriage, they settled in Franza, Munoz, Nueva Ecija, and raised 4 children – two boys and two girls. They were engaged in farming various products including rice, onions, garlic, corn, and other vegetables. While in the Philippines, Shoney was very active in local politics – she was President of the Ladies Association in their barrio and her husband was a councilman.
Shoney came to the United States in 1990 to live with her oldest daughter, and she became a United States citizen in 2003. She enjoyed going to the Austell Senior Center everday and received the Outstanding Clients Volunteer Award from Cobb Senior Services in 2008 and 2015; she also served as treasurer at the senior center. She especially enjoyed the center’s bingo days and showed off her winnings when she came home. She also loved participating in the center’s field days and was so proud of all the medals she won. No one could ever beat her in the cornhusking because, as she claimed, she had the advantage of being a former farmer!
She had a green thumb and loved gardening, especially her “extra-long” green beans! She also loved knitting and making hats and scarves for her family and friends and blankets for the homeless. She loved playing board games with her family and sitting on the front porch to do puzzles.
Shoney’s passion was her family. She loved spending time with her family in the US, but was also thinking about her family back in the Philippines; she would go back to visit every few years. She would send all her earnings back to her family in the Philippines and helped provide an education for several grandchildren.
Shoney was preceded in death by her husband, Ignacio Galam; and first grandchild, Edriel Deo Galam. Shoney is survived by her five siblings, Dr. Herminigildo Paraguison, Jessica Malicdim, Gregorio Paraguison, Jr., Fely de Guzman, and Rolenda Baragan; four children, Eduardo Galam (spouse, Dionisia), Berna Bray (spouse, Skip), Bernadette Chavez, and George Galam (spouse, Naning); 10 grandchildren, Ruby Joyce Toledana, Jenny Rose Fabula (spouse, Jonathan), Hazel Joyce Galam, Joenald John Chavez, Donnavelle Chavez, Jobelyn Garcia (spouse, Francis), Arjelle Galam, Manuel Galam, Brian Bray (spouse, Nykia), and Lindsey Dunnahoo (spouse, Justin); and 11 great-grandchildren, Danna Erine Rodriguez, Danna Erra Chavez, Joseph Ignacious Galam, Shawn Lawrence Fabula, Mishka Fabula, Gabriel Toledana, Abiah Summer Garcia, Jackson Alexander Dunnahoo, Bella Rose Bray, Charlotte Allen Bray, and Emma Elizabeth Bray.
A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday 4:00 PM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with Father Brian officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation prior to the service Wednesday from 3:00-4:00 PM at the church.
Donations may be made to Cobb County Senior Services, 1150 Powder Springs St, Marietta, GA 30064.
