Charles John McGowan's Obituary
Charles J. McGowan, aged 72, died Sunday November 6th
at Atlanta VA Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mr. McGowan is survived by his wife, Kathleen (nee Brown) and four
children: Daniel of South Korea, Matthew of Columbus Ohio, Eileen of
Alexandria Virginia and Joseph of Mableton Georgia. He is also survived by
his brother Kevin P of East Lime Connecticut. He was predeceased by his
father, Charles B and mother, Pauline F of Norwich Connecticut.
He grew up in Norwich Connecticut. He was a member of Saints Peter and
Paul Church in Norwich. He attended Saint Bernard School (Uncasville,
CT) and Saint Bonaventure University (Olean, NY).
Charlie is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served with honor in the
United States Army (83rd Field Artillery) and earned several medals
including the Bronze Star.
He was full of mirth. He traveled North America extensively. He took
pleasure in books, quips, and conversation with his family and friends. He
was a remarkable story-teller, and middling gardener. He gave great hugs.
His professional experience varied widely, but he retired as a salesman. He
was an adoring father and husband. He and his wife Kathleen raised their
family in North Ridgeville Ohio, but migrated to Mableton Georgia in 2014.
He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Third Order of Saint
Francis, as well as a parishioner at Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic
Church in Smyrna Georgia.
Services will be private and he will be interred at the Georgia National
Cemetery in Canton.
