Billie Sue Akery Gibbs Elliott's Obituary
Billie Sue Akery Gibbs Elliott, age 90, of Marietta passed on to her Heavenly home April 26, 2024.
Sue was born to Willie Lee Akery and Eddie Emily Huddleston Akery in Randolph, AL. The family moved to Carroll County when Sue was very young, and she spent her formative years in the Carrollton area. Sue graduated from Mt. Zion High School. Sue retired from Print Pack after 30 years of service.
She was the epitome of a hardworking, dedicated mother. Her children recall her favorite phrase, “If I’m working, everybody’s working.” She had a spirit of ingenuity and would try her hand at anything. If broken, she would try to fix it before calling anyone else. If the gutters needed cleaning, she was two stories up on a ladder doing it herself. She lived this example her entire life.
Sue inspired everyone around her to be independent and never depend on someone else. Sue was an encourager. When her father said he wanted to be baptized in the Jordan River, but did not have anyone to go with him, Sue devoted her time to going with him. She was selfless, always encouraging and enabling others to live their dreams. For years, Sue volunteered in a food kitchen and was a caregiver. Her caring and giving nature was realized in being a mother to everyone, whether related or not. She took many people under her wing and gave them the motherly or grandmotherly love that they needed.
Sue was a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend that will be dearly missed by all who love her.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Burke Elliott; and siblings, Earl Akery, Loise Pritchett, Mack Akery, and Charlie Ray Akery.
She is survived by her children, Donna Mattox (John) of Douglasville, Michael Gibbs (Ed) of Marietta, Angela Edwards (Johnnie) of Mableton, and Deborah Griffin of Palm Coast, FL; siblings, Betty Walker (Fred) of Jacksonville, FL, Gerald “Shorty” Akery (Darlene) of Mableton, and Carlos Akery of Atlanta; grandchildren, Johnathan Edwards (Joelle), Jonah Edwards, Michael Griffin (Summer) and Brittany Griffin (Kayla) ; step-children, Joe Elliot (Dale), Mark Elliot (Cindy), and Anne Elliott; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many beloved extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, April 28th, from 4:00 to 6:30 PM at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home.
A funeral service honoring Sue’s life will be held on Monday, April 29th, 11:00 AM at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church with Dr. Randal Whitten officiating. A lie in state at the church will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Mt. Harmony Baptist Church’s Building Fund, 561 Veterans Memorial Hwy SE, Mableton, GA 30126
