Betty Clay Black's Obituary
A bright spot in our lives, Mrs. Betty Clay Black, age 92, left this world January 9, 2024.
Betty was born in the Mt. Harmony area of Mableton to Reginald Dewey Clay and Lee Esther Clay (neé Moon). In the early part of her life, the family moved to the Austell area, and it was on that same property where Betty lived the rest of her life. Betty graduated from Austell High School and a couple of years later at Clarkdale swimming pool, she met the love of her life, Roy Charles Black.
Family was a priority in Betty’s life. She dearly treasured time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who fondly knew her as “Mamuther”. She was a selfless and giving caretaker for many years to multiple people in her family, and you could not find a more loyal friend. She had a way of meeting people where they are, and of believing the best of everyone. Betty had a sparkle that could not be dimmed.
Betty engaged in many hobbies over the years, as she loved to stay active. She enjoyed hosting tea parties for her great-grandchildren and for many years hosted a bridge group. She loved nature, being in the mountains, and the flowers in her garden. Betty was sharp, very tech savvy for her age, and a “Find My Friends” enthusiast. She was adept at sewing and cooking, and many happy memories were made in Mamuther’s kitchen.
Betty was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Roy C. Black; and brother, Reginald Clay. She is survived by her sons, Charles Clay Black of Powder Springs, John Burton Black, M.D. of Atlanta, and Reginald Scott Black of Lincoln, AL; grandchildren, Ana Maria Richards and her husband, Terry of Powder Springs and Reginald C. Black and his wife, Amy of Powder Springs; great-grandchildren, Reed, Elias, Liliana, Abigail, Jeremiah, Bethany, Josiah, Hannah, and Hope; honorary daughters, Jean Thompson and her husband, Phil of Acworth, and Becky Farrell and her husband, Tom of Mobile, AL; and many beloved extended family and friends.
A funeral service honoring Betty’s life will be held Saturday, January 13, 3:00 PM at Davis-Struempf Chapel with Reginald C. Black officiating. Interment will follow the service at Clay Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends before the service from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
For anyone wishing to view the service virtually, a livestream link will be available at the above listed service time on Betty's Tribute page at www.davisstruempf.com
