With the nation still reeling from the fall of the World Trade Center, a group of us at Delta Technology were trying to figure out how to restore communications to the computers in JFK airport. I devised a way to quadruple our capacity using existing equipment and analog lines, but the techs in NY were too exhausted to implement it. Barry Smith was one of the two engineers who volunteered to go on the first plane to New York after the attacks. (Anthony Terry was the other.)
We worked tirelessly for several hours re-configuring workstations at gates, baggage, and ticket locations throughout the airport. At every turn there was something demoralizing - the National Guard standing at entrances and hallways with machine guns, people huddled in the corners of the airport crying, others sleeping on the floor with no place to stay. Everyone there looked both shell-shocked and exhausted. Barry, however, had a steadfast "Let's get it done" attitude that ended up being the rally cry of our team. Barry's resolve became the backbone of our team, I'm glad he was there.
... and after we were done, the only hotel available in the area was this really seedy cash-only place with bulletproof glass around the check-in counter. Barry took the room with the round bed and heart-shaped mirror on the ceiling. If I can find the photo, I'll post it.
R.I.P. my friend. And thanks.
