Murl “Ray” Richardson, age 74, of Powder Springs passed away January 13, 2022. Ray was a long-time resident of Cobb County, having grown up here and graduated from McEachern High School. After his graduation, Ray was immediately drafted into the Army and served during the Vietnam War. When Ray exited the military, he pursued a life of service to his community by becoming a law enforcement officer. Ray served on the force as a detective with Cobb County Police Department and was the 53rd officer ever hired in Cobb PD. After 18 years with Cobb, he transferred to the Powder Springs Police Department and spent 20 years on their force, and retired as Deputy Chief. In his free time, Ray loved spending time with his family, especially his beloved grandbabies, to whom he was known as “Papa”. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Eloise Richardson; wife of 47 years, Susan Richardson; and brother, Jimmy Richardson. He is survived by his children, Tracy Fossett (husband, Chris) of Cedartown, and Shannon Nichols (husband, David) of Dallas; brother, Rick Richardson of Powder Springs; grandchildren, Hunter, Shelby, Madison, Abbie, Gavin, Garrett, and Ariel; and many beloved extended family and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 21, 2:00 PM at Davis-Struempf Chapel with Rev. Bruce Fossett and Pastor Vermon Parmer officiating. Interment will follow the service at Powder Springs Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 PM before the service.
