What a special, special man Mr. Ed Reece was in my life. As a young girl he and Mrs. Reece opened their pool to our family to enjoy as if it was our own. His radiant smile coupled with the sweet fragrance of their gardenia shrubs always welcomed us to day full of fun and laughter. As life and growing up took us from those days and my driving years arrived, a day never went by without beeping my horn to wave to Mr. Reece as he sat on his front porch as I passed by. Seeing him along with his infamous "You Are Now Entering (or Leaving) Socktown" signs on his mailbox always brought a smile to my face.
Thinking about it now does, too. Oh, but don't forget the sneaky side of Mr. Reece! He and my husband, Kirk, who was my fiance at the time, devised a way to conceal a surprise visit by hiding Kirk's truck inside Mr. Reece's garage. He reveled in being a part of that trickery! Again, it makes me chuckle just to think about it. After I married Kirk and moved away, it was (and still is) a treat to drive by his house while in town and remember all the happiness and fun I had there.
With great sadness Kirk and I will not be able to attend tomorrow's services to honor and remember the wonderful man that Mr. Reece was. My heart hurts for the family as they grieve his loss and learn what life feels like without his presence, but I imagine and hope that all the great and happy memories that are lovingly stored in their hearts and minds will carry them through. Hugs to all of you.
