Joe Alonzo Cortez Sr.

Joe Alonzo Cortez, Sr, age 74, of Lithia Springs passed away February 27, 2022. Joe was born to Bruno and Adelina Cortez in San Antonio, TX in 1947. He was drafted into the service of the United States Army in 1965; and while he was in the service, he met his beloved wife, Carolyn, in 1967. In 1969, Joe was deployed to Vietnam with the Americal (23rd Infantry) Division. Once he returned stateside, he was once again deployed to Korea. Joe was honorably discharged in 1971. After his military service, Joe worked numerous jobs, including working services at Mozley Memorial Gardens and working for Cobb County Department of Transportation. He was a kind and generous man, and he never met a stranger. He loved his family, friends, his Lord, and especially his country. Joe was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be dearly missed. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Bruno and Adelina Cortez; son, Cory Shaun Cortez; and siblings, Walter “Tom” Alonzo, Josefina “Josie” Hinojos, and Maria Anita “Yankee” Nabarrette. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Carolyn R. Cortez; son, Joe Alonzo Cortez, Jr. (wife, Sharon) of Sharpsburg; grandchildren, Chase, Colt, and Adelina; siblings, Arturo Alonzo, Sr. (wife, Catalina), Bruno Cortez, Jr. (wife, Rosa), Alejandro “Alex” Cortez (wife, Carol), Mario Cortez (wife, Olivia), Ray Cortez, Diana C. Garza (husband, Hector), Thelma C. Siguaw (husband, Michael), Sandra Curtis (husband, Michael), Jo Ann C. Ramirez (husband, Rodolfo), and Irene Cortez; brothers-in-law, William F. Jones and James B. Jones (wife, Sara); aunt, Dora Cortez; and many beloved extended family members and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 4, 2:00 PM at Davis-Struempf Chapel. Interment will follow the service at Mozley Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:00 to 2:00 PM before the service.
