Like many who knew Scott, I met him at my very first Wheelhopper. I remember the exact day, May 25, 2001. My first ride, and it was long and hot and painful. I was taking pictures and Scott made it a point to come over and talk with me so I could give some pictures for the website, which quickly turned into a talk about the trail that day.
I have well over 100 rides under my belt, and Scotty was there for every single one of them, and all the campouts that we had. He was such a good guy, and no trail was ever complete without talking to him about it. He could always find something nice and exciting to say about even the crappiest trail, and if the trail was amazing, you just had to sit back and enjoy how he would walk you through every awesome section of it in extreme detail.
His excitement was infectious. I absolutely think that my own love of mountain biking grew just by talking to him about it. As the years passed I brought my then girlfriend, now wife, to the hashes, and she developed a great relationship with him as well. She actually saw the news of his passing online before I did and she just shrieked with sadness.
Sadly, we had not seen Scott in a number of years. When we started a family our Wheelhopper days came to an end. We actually just attended our first Wheelhopper campout in about 5 years just a few months ago. We brought our 2 young kids who we would have loved to introduce to him, Scott was not there though unfortunately though everyone asked about him and how he was doing.
Our hearts go out to all of his friends and family. He was definitely one of the good ones and will be missed. On-On
